A film from the groundbreaking PBS series
Wide Angle

Look, we know how to do treatment, we know how to do prevention, we know how to do home based care, we know how to stop the transmission from mother to child during the birthing process. We have the entire apparatus in place [to stop the AIDS epidemic in Southern Africa] if the world cared enough. If they weren't willing to write off millions of people every year -- have them die prematurely -- then we could stop the pandemic.

  • Stephen Lewis, Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

In AIDS WARRIORS, spectacular cinematography captures both the beauty of Angola and the harsh realities of a country struggling to recover from nearly three decades of civil war. Peace finally comes to Angola in 2002, but the chaos of war is being replaced by a new menace: AIDS . Civil war prevented the spread of the AIDS epidemic by isolating Angola from neighboring countries with high HIV rates, however a number of factors may lead to an HIV/AIDS explosion. To stem the spread of the disease, the Angolan army takes a bold and noble move, testing soldiers and encouraging them to engage in safe sex.

Don't miss this award-winning WIDE ANGLE episode.

"In AIDS Warriors we witness Angola´s decision to turn its military into educators and the country´s first line of defense against the impending AIDS epidemic. The film captures a rare example of a government with the political will to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS and protect present and future generations of Angolans."
